Mission and Goals

Mission:
We seek to develop in our students high levels of bilingualism and bi-literacy (Japanese and English) so that students maintain native level proficiency in their first language (Japanese) while developing academic functional proficiency in English. Equally important is that we ensure students master the knowledge and skills of the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and the requirements of the International Baccalaureate Organization.

The program also incorporates the three pillars of education at Katoh Schools: Respect for the individual -which honors oneself and others while recognizing the intrinsic value of all living things; Creativity - which fosters a curious mind, and multiple modes of thinking with the ability to communicate and express oneself with imagination and resourcefulness: and Sincerity - which encourages responsibility, and a caring, compassionate attitude towards others.

Beyond this, we believe that our students, while maintaining a strong appreciation and understanding of their own culture and language, must also develop a global perspective, with interpersonal skills of cooperation, teamwork, leadership, and social responsibility that is required of a “world citizen.”

Goals:
1. Achieve functional proficiency in English in order to continue their academic courses taught in English.
2. Maintain Japanese language development at the same level or higher than non-immersion students.
3. Master subject content at their appropriate grade level.
4. Acquire an understanding and appreciation of other languages and cultures while maintaining their own Japanese identity.
5. Develop the personal qualities of respect, creativity and sincerity.
