Where Are We?

Numazu is about 1 hour south of Tokyo on the Pacific coast at the foot of Mt Fuji.

Shizuoka Prefecture
Numazu City

Shizuoka Prefecture is located in the approximate center of Japan, facing the Pacific to the south. It is home to Mt Fuji and scenic natural splendor. Shizuoka's mountains and rivers, plains and coastline, hot springs and lakes fill the prefecture with constantly changing natural beauty. The coastline tends to be rocky with many famous hot springs. Some of the best swimming beaches are on the eastern side of Izu Peninsula. To the north of Numazu are the magnificent Southern Alps.

Numazu enjoys four distinct seasons. Spring is mild, the early part of summer is our rainy season, and in the latter half of the summer it becomes hot, humid and sunny. Autumn brings cool fine weather and it is very dry and fine in the winter. It rarely snows in the lower elevations. The average annual temperature in Numazu is 16.1C (61F) and annual precipitation is 2,326mm (about 9 inches). With the exception of the northern mountainous region, the prefecture has a mild maritime climate.

How to get from Narita International Airport to Numazu

1. After passing through customs, you may want to ship most of your baggage to Numazu by takkyubin (Express Shipping)*. There are at least two shipping offices in the Mezzanine as you come out of customs. Both are equally efficient and fast. (Baggage can usually be delivered by the afternoon of the following day.) If you know your address, it is recommended that you send all boxes and baggage directly to your apartment.

2. Go to the Narita Express ticket counter and buy your ticket to Mishima*. You will need two tickets:
  A. The Narita Express ticket to Tokyo station.
  B. The Shinkansen ticket from Tokyo to Mishima station.

You can buy both these tickets at this counter. Cost for both tickets is approximately ¥7,000. After buying the tickets go down the escalator and follow the signs to the Narita Express train platform.

3. After arriving at Tokyo station you must change to the Shinkansen platform (unfortunately at the opposite end of the station!). Before getting on the Shinkansen check to be sure it is a KODAMA Shinkansen. Kodama trains stop at all stations. The other type of Shinkansen (Hikari) only stops at major stations. If you get on this train by mistake you could end up at the other end of the country before you can get off - so be careful! (Yes, teachers have actually done this!).  The trip from Tokyo to Mishima is about 1 hour.

* Please ask for a receipt for the train tickets and takkyubin (shipping company). In Japanese: Ryoshusho o onegaishimasu. = “Please give me a receipt.” Bring these receipts with you and turn them in at the school to get reimbursed for these expenses. No reimbursements can be made without these receipts.
