Gyoshu Junior & Senior High School |
|
Gyoshu Junior &
Senior High School is a six-year, college preparatory program for
students in grades 7 – 12. The total student population (grades
7-12) is approximately 900 students. About 150 of these students are
in the Bilingual Program.
The school offers three course options
for students:
1) Core Course: This is the basic curriculum track following the
Japanese national curriculum and taught in Japanese. The entrance
test includes math and Japanese exams. |
| |
|
2) Alpha Course: This course follows the same Japanese
national curriculum, taught in Japanese, but moves at a much
faster pace. Most of these students typically enter pre-med or
top science universities in Japan. The entrance test includes
math and Japanese exams. |
| |
| 3) Bilingual Program:
This program integrates the Japanese national curriculum and the
International Baccalaureate Program (Middle Years Program and
Diploma Program). The entrance test includes math, Japanese and
English exams. |

At the base of the
Bilingual Program is the national Japanese curriculum. The school is
accredited by the Shizuoka Board of Education and all of the courses
offered at Gyoshu follow the guidelines of the Japanese Ministry of
Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). In this
way, the Bilingual Course is similar to the other course options at
Gyoshu. But the Bilingual Course goes beyond these basic guidelines
and has integrated the prestigious International Baccalaureate
Middle Years Program (MYP) and Diploma Program (DP) into the program
and conducts 40% to 80% of the instruction in English. The Middle
Years Program is a four-year course for students in grades 7-10. The
Diploma Program is for students in grades 11 – 12. What we call the
“Bilingual Course” is a six-year program that integrates the MYP,
DP, and the national Japanese curriculums into one program, and uses
two languages (Japanese and English) as the medium of instruction.

Upon graduation
students are eligible to receive Japanese and an IB diploma. All
students who complete the program receive a Japanese high school
diploma from Gyoshu Junior & Senior High School. They are eligible
to sit for the external IB exams held in November each year.
Students who meet the requirements set forth by the IBO receive the
prestigious IB diploma. Students that do well in the IB program but
who are unable to meet the qualifications for the full IB diploma
may be able to receive certificates in specific subjects.
