Elementary Program at Katoh Gakuen |
| |
|
The elementary
immersion program at Katoh started in April 1992. It is based on
successful immersion programs from US and Canada where foreign
language is taught not as a subject but rather used as the medium of
instruction. Our program is a partial immersion program: students
spend between 50% - 70% of their day studying in English and the
other part of their day studying in Japanese. |
| |
|
|
The program
follows the regular Japanese curriculum and is accredited by the
Japanese Ministry of Education. We currently have 260 students
enrolled from grades 1 – 6 with approximately 45 students at
each grade level. Grades 1, 2 and 3 have two native English
speaking homeroom teachers and one Japanese homeroom teacher.
Grades 4, 5 and 6 typically have, one native-English speaking
homeroom teacher and one Japanese homeroom teacher. |

The school has
a number of support personnel as well. We have teachers who
support in the computer/technology area, English classes, Art,
Music, PE, and a Reading Intervention program. Subjects are
generally divided by language. It is rare to split a subject
area between the two teachers and teach part of the subject in
English and part in Japanese. The general principle of the
school is that some subjects are allocated to the
English-speaking teacher and entirely taught in English. |
|
|
|
|
The other
subjects are taught by the Japanese teacher and taught in
Japanese. The English speaking teachers and the Japanese
speaking teachers have their own classrooms and the students
move between these to study different subjects with each of
their homeroom teachers. Our school day is broken up into six
45-minute periods with a 5-minute break between each. Special
after school classes are also offered to assist where
necessary. |

|
|
|
From grade 3, all
immersion students participate in weekly cultural and sporting club
activities together with the students from the regular program. |
